{"id":413,"date":"2016-08-01T12:58:44","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T12:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/guardianpharmacy.net\/atlanta\/?p=413"},"modified":"2016-08-01T12:58:44","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T12:58:44","slug":"dementia-medication-and-the-challenge-for-independence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/guardianpharmacy.com\/georgia-atlanta\/2016\/08\/01\/dementia-medication-and-the-challenge-for-independence\/","title":{"rendered":"Dementia, Medication, and the Challenge for Independence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This topic was presented at one of Guardian Pharmacy of Atlanta\u2019s personal care communities during a family night education series they were hosting in July.\u00a0 It was well received, and is a pertinent topic for anyone dealing with dementia in their family.\u00a0 Alzheimer\u2019s type dementia is the most prevalent type of dementia currently diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer\u2019s disease in 2016. It is believed that 5.2 million of these Americans are 65 years of age and older, and this number will continue to escalate as more and more of the Baby Boomer Generation reaches this age bracket.\u00a0 Alzheimer\u2019s dementia is officially listed as the sixth leading cause of death, and sadly is the only disease among the top ten causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two types of medications to treat the cognitive symptoms (memory loss, confusion, and problems with thinking and reasoning) of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u00a0 Although many other types of medications are used, there are multiple side effects and other problems associated with using some of these medications.
